What the ‘huge’ march showed
Dear Sir,
I would like to respond to the article in last week's Chronicle in which you report Paul Nuttall's (MEP) thoughts on the Brexit process.
While I agree with him that it has been a shambles, as approached by Theresa May and her government, I don't agree with his conclusions.
We live in a representative democracy and our MPs rather belatedly are doing their best to decide what is in the country's interests.
While the country did vote by a narrow margin to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum, it was without any clear idea of what our relationship with our closest and largest trading partner would be when we did.
Moreover, the referendum was fl awed, in my view terminally, and while the courts did not agree, common justice would argue that there were many irregularities in its conduct especially for a vote of such long-term signifi cance.
As the huge People's March on Saturday showed there is still a huge number of the electorate who feel very strongly that they should be given a further vote before coming to a fi nal decision.
Yours faithfully,
(DR) PETER HIRST
Middlewich.
