We need respect for varying views.

Dear Sir,

While reading the letters pages of last week's Chronicle, it occurred to me to ask myself what is a good person in politics or elsewhere.

There is no monopoly of wisdom; just different people with different views.

Whether you take a local, general, short or long-term, self or other perspective, your opinion has merit.

What we need therefore to take this town, country or borough forward is respect for varying views.

At the very least this means allowing others with whom we disagree the same weight as those we agree with.

Consensus decision making implies no-one getting their complete way and looking for win-win solutions.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Peter Hirst
