UK must stand up to the bullies

Dear Sir,

Bullies admire other bullies.

Those who show weakness or subservience to a bully are only treated with even greater contempt by that bully.

We should have learnt from the 1930's that the only way to deal with a country led by a bully is for the other countries to stand up united against that bully's threats at the earliest possible opportunity.

With President Trump we are once again faced with a bully who admires fellow bullies like Putin and Kim Jong-un but who treats friends who show politeness such as Justin Trudeau with utter contempt .

Our Prime Minister revealed her weak and desperate position following the Brexit vote by offering Trump a full State Visit within a few days of his inauguration. By showing such weakness our Prime Minister had made, (using Trump terminology), a big, big mistake.

The more subservient our Prime Minister is to Trump by giving him special treatment regarding extra pomp and ceremony on his visit to the U.K.to inflate his ego, the more the Prime Minister's weakness is exposed and the more his inflated ego will repay our Prime Minister with contempt and rudeness as proven by Trump's outrageous article in the Sun newspaper.

Trump has proved that the U.K. counts for nothing in his America First, America First policy by slapping on tariffs on U.K. steel which will have a devastating impact on our steel industry. For the U.K. the implications can only worsen as the international tariff war widens.

We must prepare ourselves, despite how much we dread the prospect of Trump with his populist America First Policy, of Trump being re-elected and remaining in power for yet another six and half years.

Clearly the U.K. needs all the friends it can muster in order to stand up to the bullies currently on the world stage and there could not be a worse time than now for the U.K. to leave the European Union.

The idea of leaving the Europe Union in the current world climate is nothing short of sheer madness.

Yours faithfully,

Robert Douglas,
