Time for MPs to put the nation first
Dear Sir,
I refer to FE Hutchinson's letter on p39 of 3rd August's Chronicle and in particular his words, "at any price".
This reflects the view of some Brexiteers that the electorate voted to leave the EU whatever the consequences.
Whatever untruths were told about this during the referendum campaign, it remains true that in a representative democracy, MPs have the final word about any Bill presented to them.
They would be abrogating their responsibility to vote for something that in their judgement was not in the best long-term interests of the country.
Voting against it, as the Lib Dems did, or abstaining would have sent a clear message to Government that it should think again and give more information about this important issue.
It is time that parliamentarians, whatever their political colour, exercised their rights and indeed responsibilities and put the nation first.
Yours faithfully,
DR PETER HIRST
Middlewich.
