The British people deserve their say

Dear Sir, - I cannot resist the temptation to respond to Ken Elliott's letter in last week's Chronicle, page 30.

He bemoans my hypocrisy in talking about respecting political decisions made by a democratic process when talking about the Brexit referendum.

This gives me the opportunity of reminding your readers that we are not disputing the referendum result, despite the shoddy processes involved.

It was, however, a referendum on leaving the European Union, something that certain sectors of the electorate and media have been campaigning on for over a decade.

What it was not was a referendum on the negotiation package reached, once we have disentangled ourselves from our major trading partner.

We believe the British people deserve a say on whether the negotiated settlement is better than remaining in the EU, an entirely different question from that asked last June. - Yours faithfully,

(DR) PETER HIRST

Middlewich.
