Response to letter about leaving the EU

Dear Sir,

In response to Mr Griffith's letter in last week's Chronicle about leaving the EU, it is true that Germany is not having an easy ride at the moment.

It remains however, the powerhouse of the continent and it is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture at such times.

It was brave of her to adopt an open door policy for immigrants; the vast majority of whom I assert are fleeing persecution and intolerable living conditions.

Many are coming to Europe for various reasons and simplistic arguments for political reasons should be avoided.

Most, especially the Syrians will want to return home once their region has stabilised as happened with many from the new EU states.

Of course, justice must take its course in the diesel scandal and without the EU there would probably be no or at least less stringent emission limits with all the increased pollution and loss of life that would cause.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Peter Hirst
