Peter Hirst has been selected as the prospective Liberal Democrat candidate for Congleton Constituency.

The Liberal Democrats said they are now ready to fight a general election, selecting candidates in seats such as Congleton.

This move follows reports that the new Prime Minister might go to the country early, before a possible recession and to take advantage of Labour in-fighting.

Mr Hirst said: "I am really proud to have been re-selected as it would be a huge honour to represent this wonderful area.

"My three campaign priorities will be retaining jobs, combatting unwanted development especially residential and maintaining local services such as buses.

"Nationally the country is in crisis. Both the Conservatives and Labour are focused entirely on in-fighting while the economy worsens, threatening jobs, public services and our efforts to build the houses Britain so badly needs.

"The Liberal Democrats will go into the election as the only party committed to protecting Britain's role in the heart of Europe."
