Preserve council communications

Dear Sir,

Reading the letter pages of last week's Chronicle made me realise how important transparency is to the workings of the council and elsewhere.

Often, different political parties cannot really act differently because of the fi nancial, logistical and legal constraints on them.

What they can do, however is create a process whereby all communications internally and externally that the council conducts are preserved and easily retrieved up to say fi ve years or longer.

No-one, even the leader, can know what is being said and done on their behalf by a council so large as Cheshire East.

The least they can do in the interests of truth and preventing incorrect statements being perpetuated is ensuring that there is a verifi able record of what is said and done on their behalf.

The Liberal Democrats believe that maintaining these records should be the responsibility of named councillors and offi cers of the council and any missing documents would need explaining to full council. - Yours faithfully,

(DR) PETER HIRST

Chairman,

Congleton Liberal Democrats.
