People deserve a second referendum
Dear Sir,
With reference to recent letters published in The Chronicle concerning the decision to leave the EU, the Liberal Democrats, the most consistently pro-EU Party decided at their recent conference in Brighton to campaign for a further referendum, once the terms of the negotiation with the countries of the EU are finalised.
The reasons for this is that no-one knew in June what our relations with the continent would be if we left, the referendum was poorly conducted and the result was close so the British people deserve a separate vote on the outcome.
This is the consequence of the referendum being called by the Conservative Party for internal political reasons with little thought for the country as a whole.
We feel that this second referendum should be conducted in a much improved way with a stronger electoral commission controlling the media and politicians keeping out of the way.
This should be easier because we will know the end point of our decision and so be able to make a more informed rational choice as to whether to accept the deal negotiated by Theresa May and her government.
This is such an important decision that it is essential that we as a nation give our representatives a clearer indication of our wishes once more information is available.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
