Pavements need to be user friendly
Dear Sir,
Large HGVs are increasingly using Crewe and Lawton Roads in Alsager as a short cut, especially when there is congestion on the M6.
Our Alsager Cheshire East councillors, Rod Fletcher and Derek Hough have already requested a weight restriction and 20 MPH signs on these roads and are waiting for Highways to respond.
This a common problem on many of the roads in the old Congleton Borough due to its position abreast of the motorway and the fact that these roads were not designed for such traffic.
Some of these vehicles are frighteningly large and should only be allowed on primary routes, except during exceptional defined times such as the prolonged closure of motorways.
This is especially a problem during school opening and closing times and during the day for our elderly residents.
If we are to reduce our dependence on the private car for short journeys, our pavements must be much more user friendly and Cheshire East could set an example by being more liberal with the use of these restrictions.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
