Misplaced loyalty to idea of Brexit

Dear Sir,

I'd like to comment on Bogbrush's letter in last week's Chronicle where (s)he touches on the reasons for this country's headlong rush into oblivion in the name of Brexit.

Where I think the mistake lies is in the well-intentioned though misplaced loyalty of many in the Conservative, and to a lesser extent, the Labour Party.

Without thinking it through, David Cameron's Conservative government decided to call a referendum on remaining or leaving the EU.

When the result was known, both Parties decided they had to "respect the will of the people" for political reasons and the rest as they say is history.

This misplaced loyalty to an idea, ie Brexit in turn derives from this same principle applying to their parties on which they depend for their political success.

If I am right, the reason for this self-destruction is that neither can completely free themselves from this misguided value that might be respected in other circumstances.
