Migration and a vote to leave the EU

Dear Sir,

I would like to comment on Cllr Porter's letter in last week's Chronicle, p37 concerning immigration and the eu referendum.

He states that the only way we can control immigration is by leaving the eu.

He is, I presume referring to eu migration where we have free movement despite not being a member of the Schengen agreement that does away with passport controls.

If we were to leave the eu, then migrants from the eu would be treated similarly to migrants from outside it.

Surely, this would lead to more illegal migrants that are the worst kind, wherever they are from.

Also, it would not be as easy for groups such as The Harvestehude Symphony Orchestra from Hamburg, Germany to come over and give those of us who could attend such a scintillating evening of classical music last Saturday in Congleton Town Hall.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Peter Hirst
