May not be the right person for Easter message

Dear Sir,

Since when have prime ministers assumed they are the right people to deliver Easter messages? In your Factcheck some weeks ago, you correctly stated that our country is more divided now than at the time of the 2016 referendum when the country voted on the issue of our country's membership of the EU.

Without question, the person to blame for this increased division is our prime minister.

When our prime minister took office following the very narrow win for the leave vote, it was her duty to take a middle course in the negotiations with the EU, to bring both sides in the referendum debate together.

Instead our prime minister decided, for party political reasons, to take the most extreme stance on Brexit in the anticipation that by hoovering up the UKIP voters she would be able to win a landslide victory for her party, not caring a jot for the 48.1% of the voters who had supported remaining in the EU.

Fortunately, our prime minister's ineptitude lost her party its majority in last year's general election.

Despite that, our prime minister continues to push on with divisive policies such as freezing benefits for the poorest in society, which the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has predicted will drive half a million more people into poverty by 2020.

I am sure that there is a substantial proportion of your readership who, like me, find the delivery of an Easter message by our divisive prime minister offensive.

Yours faithfully,

ROBERT DOUGLAS

Congleton.
