Matthew Theobald for Crewe and Nantwich
On Thursday the 30th May; the South Cheshire Liberal Democrats formally announced Matthew Theobald as their candidate for the Crewe and Nantwich Constituency at one of their regular “Politics in a Pub” events.
In front of a packed audience Matthew said,” It is pleasing to see such strong local support and that it was important to remind people that this constituency is not just about the Conservative and Labour party. The Liberal Democrats have much to offer locally on many issues.”
A keen supporter of green issues, Matthew is passionate that we do not forget the many environmental issues we need to tackle, climate change, water pollution “recent shocking pollution incidents in our River Weaver have harmed both the river and wildlife, the polluters must be held to account”. He continued by highlighting the blight of turning the countryside into gigantic housing estates without consideration for the effects on the local infrastructure and community, “we must tackle the unnecessary building of 5-to-6-bedroom houses in Crewe and Nantwich which get built on flood plains and our green spaces. These houses ignore what our communities old and young need.”
However, he is keenly aware that for many people the cost-of-living crisis has had an horrendous effect and the main worry for many people is “how can I afford next month’s rent or mortgage.”
Matthew has lived near Nantwich for half his life, during which time he has served as a Governor at a local high school and as chair of his local council. He has witnessed first-hand the damaging effects of underfunding in the health service. GPs, hospitals, pharmacies, and dentists are all under strain and this has knock on effects for all Crewe and Nantwich residents.
Matthew recognises the tough challenges faced by small businesses; for over 17 years he ran a company that helped develop pharmaceuticals such as insulin injectors, asthma inhalers and injections for debilitating diseases, all helping improve people’s quality of life. So, he understands how difficult it is for small businesses and workers to make ends meet right now.
He is also concerned by the lack of major investment in the Crewe area with the loss of HS2 and how funding has been diverted elsewhere. Crewe used to be a wonderful town to shop in, but now has been neglected for over two decades. It is time that someone actually fights for the people of Crewe.
Matthew, who said he never planned to get involved in politics, could not sit by and watch this great country, and local communities get torn apart by divisive politics, under funding, and lack of empathy. He demands a fair deal for all and so should you.
