The Lib Dem candidate who came second in Congleton Town Council's by-election in West Ward last Thursday said the result was "very encouraging" for her party.

Suzy Firkin gained 664 votes, just 39 behind winner Maurice Anthony Walker for the Conservatives in what was a 20% turnout in the town.

Ms Firkin said: "From a Lib Dem perspective it was very encouraging. It shows there are people out there who aren't happy with what's going on and are ready for change.

"With it just being 39 votes, that's an indication that there are people out there willing to put their money where there mouth is and we feel it puts us in a strong position for 2019.

"Turnout (20%) wasn't excellent but we hope to get a better one now that people see there is an opportunity to make a change."
