Labour and parking charges

Dear sir,

It is now some months since articles appeared in local newspapers advising that some Labour councillors had called for car parking charges to be introduced in the former Congleton Borough Towns.

This article was not challenged by local Labour Party members at the time.

However, some are now questioning the accuracy of these reports.

I have now listened to a recording of the debate that took place.

It started by an officer explaining that consultation was to take place regarding a new strategy for car park charging across Cheshire East which could increase income.

This would include looking at car parks that are currently free to use.

On hearing this some Cheshire East Labour Councillors from the Crewe and Macclesfield area made comments that could only be interpreted as calling for the introduction of car parking charges in the former Congleton Borough Towns.

Some of these comments were accurately reported in local newspapers.

One comment not reported was that, it's about time that the disparity on car parking charges was done away with.

In my opinion having listened to the debate I believe that the reports in local newspapers were accurate.

However, if some local Labour party members are still not satisfied, they may wish to ask the local newspapers concerned for a retraction.

Yours etc.

Rod. Fletcher (Cllr).
