Her challenges and my concerns

Dear Sir,

I read with interest your long article in last week's Chronicle about Congleton's town mayor, Coun Suzie Akers Smith's attempts to improve cycling provision within the town, especially relating to the many new developments on the outskirts of the town.

It is diffi cult for me not to see this as an example of political campaigning when we are within a few months of the local elections on the 2nd May.

I have no doubts about her concerns about the lack of cycling lanes and genuine attempts to address this important issue.

When the main candidate for her frustration is a council, Cheshire East, that is controlled by the same political group, Conservatives, as the council, Congleton town that she so ably presides over, your readers will understand her challenges and my concerns.

Your readers might want to take what she and Cheshire East say on this and similar matters with a large pinch of salt at this stage of the electoral cycle as the whole discussion provides campaigning material of benefi t to the controlling bodies of both councils, the Conservatives.

I will leave it to them, your readers, to decide whether having signifi cant input from other political parties on one or both councils would give more weight to the campaigning to enhance infrastructure within the town. -Yours faithfully,

(DR) PETER HIRST

Chairman, Congleton Constituency

Liberal Democrats.
