Fairness and our place in the world

Dear Sir,

Referring to your editorial on Brexit in last week's Chronicle, you mention that it was all about sovereignty.

You are right though it is only part of the picture that also includes fairness, logistics and our place in the world.

I remember driving back from a holiday many years ago through Andorra, an independent small country sandwiched between France and Spain.

I admired the scenery and decided I'd like to live in such a place surrounded by mountains and not subject to other peoples' laws.

We are however the sixth largest trading country in the world and as such have responsibilities that others do not.

Whether we like it or not we helped to create the modern world and have the capability to with others model it in a way that respects basic human rights.

We cannot abrogate that responsibility that will be much easier if we maintain some relationships with other large trading blocks.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Peter Hirst
