Brexit may hit us in pocket

Dear Sir,

I thank W Elphinston for responding to my comments on the EU in last week's Guardian.

It is interesting that he chooses the comparison between whisky and wine as an example of why we might be better off leaving it.

With climate change, England is becoming an increasingly important wine producer and exports to continental Europe are an essential part of that market.

Also, if we leave the EU, it is likely that Scotland will hold a second referendum on independence and possible that it will win it.

Then, it is possible that scotch whisky will become more expensive for us in England than at present.

Of course, discussing the merits of staying in from the viewpoint of a single commodity or service negates the bigger picture that is in my view more important.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Peter Hirst
