Benefits outweigh any benefits to EU
Dear Sir,
Mike Williams in his letter on P16 of the 14th October issue of The Chronicle focuses on the direct payments to or from the EU as an argument for leaving it.
As Mark Carney (right), Governor of the Bank of England said in his recent speech following the publication of its report on the effects on our economy of being in the EU, the gains from the increased trade as a result of being in the EU far outweigh whatever is the net payment.
He refers to a more open economy and economic dynamism, especially direct foreign investment because of being in the EU and contrasts this with other countries outside the EU including the USA.
Not being in the euro means that it is all the more important for us to remain in the EU so that we can fight the changes to regulations that might favour this inner clique and so disadvantage us in doing trade with them.
Of course, looking to the future when nothing is certain it is essential that we forge strong relations with all our current and future trading partners so that we can maintain and grow our present global economic strength.
The best way of doing this is by remaining in the EU while strengthening our economic ties with other countries such as China, India and the USA.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
