Asylum seekers used embassies
Dear Sir,
We have all witnessed the plight of refugees seeking sanctuary from faraway places such as Africa, The Middle East and Eastern Europe.
We must do what we can to prevent these perilous journeys, taken in the often-vain hope of obtaining a new life in Europe.
I remember when embassies close to home were the chief destinations for these people.
There they could seek asylum or complete the required paper work for their immigration applications to be processed.
It makes no sense for people to risk all for an uncertain future.
If we as a nation could put more resources into allowing and even encouraging potential migrants to make such an orderly request, much anguish, danger and uncertainty could be avoided.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
