Congleton Liberal Democrats recently launched a petition to request that Cheshire East Council "immediately reopen" the Arclid recycling site, or develop an improved adjacent site that local residents can use to dispose of their unwanted items.

Robert Douglas, who lives in the same ward as the old site, said he was "dismayed" that Cheshire East Council had decided to close the site and expected local people to travel to Alsager, Congleton or even Middlewich.

He said: "It seems that Cheshire East is only interested in saving money and is oblivious to all the implications of closing this site without fi nding a suitable and improved alternative.

"I have therefore started a petition to oppose this shortsighted move."

The petition can be found at signme.org.uk/1463.

He added: "I encourage people to sign it; it already has well over 200 signatures and it has only been up for a few days."
